The DSG has a Transmission Control Unit similar to the Engine Control Unit that controls the operation of the gearbox. The TCU and ECU communicate with each other to ensure the correct gear is selected under the current driving conditions, and cross-reference some outputs, such as actual engine torque, between the TCU and ECU to keep the system under control. ECU Tuning has been determined to be the first part to improve engine performance, but there comes a point when the TCU's transmission torque limit is reached and the ECU intervenes to reduce torque and safety measures are taken. One of the primary functions of a DSG/TCU Tuning is to allow more torque to be transmitted through the Engine and Transmission resulting in more power and torque throughout the entire rev range (depending on the vehicle model), it can also be modified to improve the overall driving experience.
